The Highfield Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is a nationally recognised introductory teaching qualification designed for individuals who want to teach, train or deliver learning within their professional field. For driver trainers, ADIs and PDIs, this qualification provides a strong foundation in teaching and learning methods that can enhance the way you deliver lessons, workshops or professional development sessions. The course explores key areas such as:

  • the roles and responsibilities of a teacher or trainer
  • professional practice and boundaries
  • equality, diversity and inclusive learning
  • planning and delivering effective training sessions
  • assessment methods and constructive feedback

During the course you will plan and deliver a short micro-teach session, allowing you to practise your teaching skills in a supportive learning environment. The qualification is delivered through blended online learning, combining live tutor-led sessions with independent study and written assignments. This course is particularly valuable for driver trainers who want to develop their professional teaching skills, deliver training within organisations, or expand their career into coaching, mentoring or vocational education.

Do I need to already be teaching to take this course?
No. You do not need to be currently working as a teacher or trainer. This course is designed as an introduction to teaching and training.
What can I teach after completing this qualification?
You can use this qualification to deliver training in adult education, workplace learning or private training environments, including driver training, CPD sessions or workshops.
Is this suitable for driving instructors and driver trainers?
Yes. The course is well suited to ADIs, PDIs and driver trainers who want to improve how they deliver lessons, coaching or structured training.
What is the micro-teach and do I need to prepare for it?
The micro-teach is a short 15-minute teaching session delivered during the course. You will plan this in advance and receive guidance from your tutor.
Will I need to write essays or academic assignments?
You will complete written assignments, but these are practical and based on your understanding of teaching and training. Clear guidance and support are provided throughout.
What happens if I need help during the course?
You can contact your tutor for support at any time, and additional one-to-one support can be arranged if needed.

What is Blended Learning?

A structured programme combining different delivery formats, such as classroom, online, and practical training, to create a comprehensive and progressive learning experience. This approach supports knowledge development, skill application, and measurable professional growth. Typical group size: 10 to 20 participants to support structured learning, discussion, and practical application across the programme.

How To Attend

Book your place online through the DIA website. Once registered, you will receive confirmation details along with joining instructions specific to your chosen training format. For face-to-face sessions, venue information and timings will be provided in advance. For online sessions, a joining link and access guidance will be sent prior to the event.

Course requirements

To take part in this course, learners must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be 19 years of age or over
  • Have access to a laptop or desktop computer with internet access
    • Mobile devices may be compatible, however they will not provide the full course and learning experience
  • Have reasonable literacy, numeracy and ICT skills
    • This is a foundation teaching qualification, so learners must be capable of engaging with course content and successfully supporting the learning of others
  • Be able to attend all scheduled live learning sessions
  • Be prepared to complete the Highfield learner pack and all required assignments
  • Be able to plan and deliver a 15-minute micro-teach session

Learners will also be required to complete initial skills assessments in literacy, numeracy and ICT at the start of the course to ensure they are working at an appropriate level.
